HASTINGS — A High Wind Warning has been issued for all of central Nebraska during the daytime hours of Thursday, Dec. 17.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, the warning will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday. Winds out of the northwest are expected at 30 to 45 mph with some scattered gusts up to 60 mph.

Some areas to the north, such as Ord, could see localized gusts around 65 to even 70 mph.

The high winds will be due to a strong low to mid-level jet streak across the region behind a departing disturbance moving from the Plains into the Midwest.

Favorable timing of the jet streak to coincided with daytime mixing and large scale subsidence, or downward movement, will be supportive of making this a rather significant wind event, per NWS Hastings.

Blowing dust will be possible given the lack of moisture across the area and near critical fire weather conditions will be possible, but the most potent conditions lie in north central Kansas.

“Very strong winds could cause damage to trees. Localized power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Localized poor visibility in areas of blowing dust,” per NWS Hastings.

“Watch for blowing debris and falling tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive. Be prepared for quickly changing visibility in areas of blowing dust,” NWS Hastings stated.
