KEARNEY SOFTBALL ENDS SEASON AT A-6 DISTRICT:
Despite a valiant effort in their opening contest at Millard West against Lincoln Pius Wednesday, the Kearney Bearcat Softball team fell short of continuing their season with a 6-5 loss coupled with a 13-1 defeat to Omaha Burke to end their season yesterday.
The Bearcats wrap their season at 13-20 overall, a seven game improvement from a year ago.
BOW EARNS C-4 DISTRICT TITLE; MINDEN RUNNER-UP:
The Broken Bow girls golf team will compete for their fourth straight Class C Championship next week, as the Indians took the C-4 District Championship at Grand Island’s Indianhead Golf Course by shooting a team total of 344 on Wednesday.
Broken Bow barely edged out Minden (346), who ended as runner-up. GICC will also earn a state placement, ending in third at 393. Holdrege (401), Kearney Catholic (426), and Gothenburg (449) ended fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.
Broken Bow ended with four golfers within the Top 12, including senior Camryn Johnson who shot a leading 77. Minden kept pace, with three in the Top Ten, led by runner-up sophomore KayLynn Jorgensen at 78.
Kearney Catholic’s senior Taylor McGuire ended sixth at 88, while Jordyn Svec was 11th at 92.
ILLINOIS’ MEMORIAL STADIUM CLEARED FOR FOOTBALL FRIDAY NIGHT:
The Illinois football team will host Nebraska as scheduled on Friday, after a fire at their stadium raised concerns.
A fire broke out in the maintenance area on the south side of the stadium around 8 p.m. Tuesday. The local fire department had the flames out in about a half hour.
The Illinois Athletic Department said Memorial Stadium was inspected and are in the process of “remediating smoke damage.” Seating will not be impacted.
Nebraska makes the trip to Champaign for a Friday night tilt with kickoff set for 7 PM. KGFW’s pregame coverage begins at 3 PM and on HITS 106-KQKY at 6:15 PM.
FORMER BLACKSHIRT GREGORY CUT BY BRONCOS:
Former University of Nebraska Football standout Randy Gregory, has been released by the Denver Broncos. Gregory signed a five-year, $70 million contract with the Broncos in 2022.
Gregory only played in six games with Denver last season due to a one-game suspension and due to injury. Gregory only generated one sack with nine tackles thus far in the 2023 season.
Gregory was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys in 2015, where he spent the entirety of his NFL career until signing with Denver in 2022.
TWO HUSKERS NAMED ALL-BIG TEN FOR PRESEASON WBB:
Jaz Shelley and Alexis Markowski earned Preseason All-Big Ten recognition from both coaches and media when the conference announced its honors on Wednesday.
Nebraska joined Ohio State as the only school in the conference to place two players on the Preseason All-Big Ten teams.
Shelley, a first-team All-Big Ten selection at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, was a member of both the Naismith Trophy and Ann Meyers Drysdale Award watch lists a year ago.
Markowski claimed Preseason All-Big Ten honors for the second consecutive season. The two-time second-team All-Big Ten choice averaged 11.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore for the Huskers in 2022-23.
