ODESSA — The Kearney and Elm Creek fire departments responded to a grass fire that occurred near the Odessa exit on Interstate 80 during the afternoon hours of Tuesday, Jan. 13.
Around 2 p.m., the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the eastbound lane of I-80 near the Odessa exit for the report of a grass fire.
On scene, a grass fires broke out in several sections along the south side of I-80, fire had also broken out in one part of the median.
The Elm Creek Volunteer Fire and Rescue was dispatched for mutual aid and arrived on scene with at least on grass rig.
Firefighters used grass rigs and went on foot to extinguish hotspots throughout the area as the fire spread further south to the side road along I-80.
The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office provided assistance with traffic control on scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
