KEARNEY — A pet was killed as the result of a structure fire that consumed an East Lawn trailer during the late morning hours of Thursday, Oct. 5.
At 11:23 a.m., the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 2900 Grand Avenue, trailer number 96 for the report of a structure fire.
As firefighters arrived on scene, black smoke could be seen billowing from the East Lawn area.
Upon arrival at the scene, crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure. Firefighters pulled hoses and applied water to the structure while other personnel made entry into the structure, facing smoke and high head conditions.
KVFD Fire Chief Aaron Jameson said the fire was knocked down within the first 15 minutes.
Crews conducted a search of the residence and found no occupants, but one dog was found deceased.
Jameson said the majority of the 24 firefighters were done on scene after an hour, but some personnel stayed behind to assist the State Fire Marshall in their investigation.
The home sustained heavy fire damage in the room of origin and heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the rest of the structure. Jameson said the fire spread throughout at least half of the structure. He said the trailer is likely a total loss.
The State Fire Marshal investigated the origin of the fire and determined the cause was an unattended candle.
The KVFD was assisted by the Kearney Police Department, Nebraska Public Power Department, Northwestern Energy, the City of Kearney Water Department and the Red Cross.
