GRAND ISLAND – A Grand Island man was arrested shortly after 3:18 p.m. Feb. 16 after being accused of assaulting two male juveniles at a Grand Island Senior High School student protest walkout south of West Lawn Elementary School on College St.
According to a Grand Island police report, police arrested Michael A. Brown of Grand Island for allegedly assaulting two juvenile males, ages 16 and 17. Brown was arrested for felony child abuse.
Police determined that Brown exited his vehicle and approached the group of protestors on the sidewalk. It was found that Brown physically assaulted one of the juveniles, causing injury.
Grand Island Public Schools Superintendent Matt Fisher issued a statement late afternoon Feb. 16. He wrote that approximately 150 students participated in the walkout. The walkout started at 1:25 p.m. Feb. 16, with students walking away from campus.
“It’s important to note that these students were following the law and were off-campus,” Fisher wrote. Fisher wrote that an adult engaged in a verbal argument with students, which escalated into a physical altercation shortly after school dismissal time. Grand Island police then intervened.
