Kearney Volunteer Fire Department on scene, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — Members of the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department responded to the report of a stove fire at a residence on the east side of Kearney during the late morning of Monday, Feb. 23.

Around 11:20 a.m., firefighters with the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) were dispatched to the 1000 block of E. 30th St. for the report of a stove fire in progress. It was also reported that home was being evacuated.

On scene, a strong smell of burning plastic was emanating from the residence. Firefighters were preparing to use fans to clear the air out.

Jason Whalen, KVFD deputy fire chief, responded to the scene and said materials had been left near or on the stove when it was turned on and began to burn.

The Kearney Police Department and Good Samaritan EMS also responded to the scene.
