Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District’s J-2 Hydroplant, (Brian Neben Central Nebraska Today)

HOLDREGE — The Central Nebraska Public Power & Irrigation District has announced that their annual spring hydrocycling period will begin on March 4 at the Johnson No. 2 Hydroplant located south of Lexington and will run to April 30.

Normally the spring hydrocycling period runs from March 18 through April 30. The presence of a whooping crane on the Platte River has triggered Central to start operating under the J-2 hydrocycling agreement with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services sooner than anticipated.

During this period, the water level at Johnson Lake usually fluctuates by up to two feet as operations are modified to minimize the rate of flow changes into the Platte River. Hydrocycling takes place each spring and fall as required by an agreement with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services.

More information about hydrocyling is available on Central’s website at – https://cnppid.com/operations/johnson-lake-operations
