GRAND ISLAND – Gov. Jim Pillen was the keynote speaker for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new 12,500-square-feet Welding Technology Building at Central Community College’s Grand Island campus.
Dr. Marcie Kimnitz, president of CCC’s Grand Island campus, said conversations about having the building started four years ago.
“I’m so proud of all the people who made this happen,” Pillen said. “We come together when there are extraordinary opportunities.”
He said that the asset will be packed with students and running double shifts.
“It’s really important you find your passion,” Pillen said. “Making things with your hands is extraordinary.”
In Nebraska, the greatest thing is the people, the governor said.
Faith Wilson is a welding student who will graduate in May. She was excited about the new equipment and expanded space in the building.
She said that welding involves discipline, patience, and pride in craftsmanship.
Grand Island Area Economic Development Corporation and Chamber of Commerce President Mary Berlie said that for every five welders exiting the profession, there are only two entering the profession. She said that Central Community College understands the gravity of the situation.
“This screams opportunity,” Berlie said.
Dr. Matt Gotschall is president of Central Community College. He said that the facility was built for students. He thanked taxpayers for supporting the building, and well as the state of Nebraska appropriating funding from the American Recovery Act. Also, the city of Grand Island contributed money from the American Recovery Act for infrastructure for the site.
