Interstate 80, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)
COZAD — Weather permitting, work will continue March 16 on Interstate 80 (I-80) between Cozad and Darr, from reference post 221.46 to reference post 230.54, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
Paul Reed Construction, of Gering, is the contractor for this project. Work includes new concrete pavement, grading, culverts, bridge replacement, bridge repair, and lighting. Anticipated completion is fall of 2027.
Weather permitting, on April 6 traffic will be shifted into a two-lane, two-way configuration on the eastbound lanes with a single lane in each direction, while work occurs on the westbound lanes. Westbound traffic will utilize a median crossover at both borders of the project. Temporary ramps will be utilized for westbound traffic to access Exit 222 (Cozad/Eustis). An 11-foot width restriction will be in effect, and the speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph.
At Exit 231 (Darr) the westbound on-ramp will be temporarily closed while work occurs on the westbound I-80 lanes. Westbound I-80 traffic will be able to exit I-80 at Exit 231 (Darr Rd) but will not be able to reenter I-80 westbound for the duration of the closure.
The Eastbound Cozad rest area near reference post 226.46 and the westbound Cozad rest area near reference post 227.14 will be temporarily closed to the public while traffic is in the two-lane, two-way configuration on I-80. The two-lane, two-way traffic is anticipated to remain in effect until late Oct. 2026.
The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.
Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.
