An American flag whips in wind gusts of 60 mph in Kearney, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

HASTINGS — Straight line winds reached 74 mph in central Nebraska after a weather system created a strong pressure gradient over the region on Sunday, March 15.

The National Weather Service – Hastings issued a High Wind Warning for Sunday, March 15.

A strong upper-level trough of low pressure was strengthening as it moved into the Great Plains and the strong pressure gradient contributed to the high wind gusts.

Straight line winds approached nearly 75 mph throughout the region on Sunday.

The highest wind gusts reported at of 4 p.m. on Sunday included: Doniphan, 74 mph; Hastings Airport, 71 mph; Ragan, 67 mph; Grand Island Airport, 67 mph; Kearney, 67 mph; Huntley, 65 mph; Holdrege, 62 mph; Sutton, 62 mph and Nelson, 60 mph.
