KEARNEY — Anything that isn’t nailed down is at risk as a High Wind Watch has been issues for parts of central Nebraska, including the Tri-Cities and areas west.
The Watch is set to be issued the evening of Thursday, Oct. 12 into Friday, Oct. 13, for areas generally west of Highway 281.
Wind gusts to 45 mph will be possible across the entire National Weather Service – Hastings forecast area, but stronger gusts closer to 55-60 mph, will be likely across portions of the watch area.
“These will be north to northwest winds, so any roads on which there is east-west travel will be experiencing strong crosswinds and may be hazardous to travel, especially for high profile vehicles, including Interstate 80,” NWS Hastings states.
Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines.
The strong winds will continue into Saturday, only diminishing as the low-pressure system moves well off to the east.
As high pressure moves over the area this weekend, there will be a slight warming in temperatures.
By early next work week, overnight lows could be cold enough for a freeze on Monday and Tuesday mornings. Patchy frost may be possible both mornings.
