HASTINGS – The Hastings College women’s soccer team had a lot to play for on Wednesday night when College of Saint Mary came to town since Concordia tied Briar Cliff earlier in the day. Hastings knew a win and they would be on top of the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings and the Lady Broncos got just that by defeating the Flames 3-1 out on Lloyd Wilson Field.
Hastings dominated play early on but it was CSM that struck first as Kylie Anderson dropped a ball back to Marissa Ring as her shot found the side of the net for the early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.
That lead carried into the 37th minute when Michaela Fox hit a shot that eluded Alivia Schade but was sent back into play by the crossbar.
Hastings continued to press and eventually found the equalizer when Dakota Schubert headed the Megan Lampe corner back into the middle of the box where Jesse Chartier ripped her shot into the back of the net to tie things 1-1 in the 40th minute.
It was at halftime that Head Coach Jade Ovendale made a few changes to the starting lineup and it paid off as Schubert sent a through ball to a streaking Sophia Lee and she hit a perfect left footed shot past Schade to give Hastings the 2-1 lead in the 50th minute.
From here, Hastings dominated the action and it would be super sub Lee that sent a perfect low cross into the box where Naomi Pedroza slid and put the ball into the net for the 3-1 lead in the 72nd minute. Pedroza nearly had another goal in similar fashion just minutes later but she would get denied by the post as the game would end in a 3-1 victory for Hastings.
Hastings out shot the Flames 19-to-6 and 9-to-5 in shots on goal but what was more impressive was not allowing a single shot in the second half
Jackson Pedersen finished the game with four saves.
Hastings improves to 12-1-2 (7-1-2) and sits alone in first place in the GPAC as the Lady Broncos will be back in action Saturday Oct. 21 hitting the road to take on Northwestern with kickoff set for 7:15 in Orange City, IA.
