GRAND ISLAND — A Grand Island police officer was bitten on the arm while arresting a woman for methamphetamine possession on Monday, Nov. 6.

Around 5:12 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Casey’s gas station on 1814 N. Eddy St. for the removal of a woman, who was verbally identified as Mary Johnson, 32.

The Grand Island Fire Department had also been dispatched with an ambulance due to Johnson’s condition.

Johnson would state several times that she had medicine in her coat. Police say when Johnson responded she said, “heart” and then “methamphetamine.”

Due to her condition, the fire department decided to transport Johnson to the hospital. Officers searched her coat, due to her statements and to make sure no scheduled controlled drugs were taken into CHI Health St. Francis.

Police located a digital scale, 78.5 grams of methamphetamine and two pipes used to smoke methamphetamine. Johnson would voluntarily confirm the substance as methamphetamine, and it tested positive after officers used a Tru Narc field test.

Prior to being released from the St. Francis emergency room, Johnson would resist officers attempting to place her in handcuffs. Police say she began to fight with officers and would bite one of them on the left arm.

Johnson was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. She was booked into Hall County Department of Corrections at 7:26 p.m.
