KEARNEY — Snow accumulations are possible across south central Nebraska on Friday and Saturday. National Weather Service – Hastings notes that their warning area will see at least some snow.
NWS Hastings states that their official forecast has trended away from daytime Friday for snow, but areas west of Highway 183 could see less than an inch of accumulation.
The far western counties, Dawson, Gosper, Furnas are favored for 1-2 inches. A dusting of snow could happen farther east.
There will be a battle between decent lift and forcing and low-level dry air feeding in from the east, so there could be a sharp cutoff near the western edge of the warning area.
Friday night into Saturday morning is being favored by the models as an upper-level shortwave trough of low-pressure tracks across the heart of the Central Plains from west to east.
The preliminary NWS Hastings forecast calls snow amounts of less than one inch north of I-80, around 1-3 inches between I-80 and the state line and the highest amounts, 4-5 inches favoring northern Kansas.
Potential exists for a “plowable” snow for many areas, NWS Hastings notes.
Winds will be fairly light, with limited blowing snow expected.
“The snow is expected to be a ‘dry snow’ in nature. However, warm ground temperatures will promote initial melt and much colder air temperatures will result in refreezing on surfaces,” NWS Hastings stated.
