HASTINGS — At approximately 3:15am this morning, Dec. 17, 2023, the Hastings Police Department along with Hastings Fire & Rescue responded to 618 South Boston Ave. The initial 911 caller reported an explosion within the residence.
Upon initial arrival on scene, there were secondary explosions occurring within the home. The residence collapsed and was destroyed due to these explosions. Based upon initial observations and information obtained early within the investigation, it was determined that the explosions were likely due to destructive devices. The Nebraska State Patrol Bomb Squad and the Nebraska State Fire Marshals Office were contacted to assist.
Since the initial response, crews have been working to locate additional destructive devices and explosive material, so a thorough investigation can be completed and the safety of all ensured. At this time an unidentified, deceased person has been located within the debris. The Adams County Attorney’s Office/Coroner has been contacted due to the death investigation that the Hastings Police Department is overseeing. Due to the level of destruction and the necessity to thoroughly secure and investigate the scene, agencies will remain there for several more hours. The Nebraska State Patrol Bomb Squad has been assisting in the collection of evidence, testing of destructive devices and safe disposal of identified devices, at a controlled location.
