GRAND ISLAND — Distracted Driving continues to challenge the safety of Nebraska drivers.

A recent study shows that about 10 percent of all drivers are distracted. The key to reducing distracted driving is high visibility enforcement by utilizing saturation patrols/regular enforcement. Even though the stop will be for another violation, drivers must perceive a risk of being caught.

The Grand Island Police Department was awarded a $3,943.28 grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Office of Highway Safety for patrol officers to work approximately 56 hours of overtime to target people who are texting and driving.

This is part of the larger nationwide effort called “U Drive. U Text. U Pay. Mobilization” taking place Monday April 1 through Monday April 8, 2024.
