GRAND ISLAND – Grand Island police released further information Dec. 29 about a Grand Island man who died Dec. 23 when he became pinned between his vehicle and the wall of the building at the drive-through lane of McDonald’s at 1317 W. Second St.
Police Division Chief Dean Elliott said that Michael Dickinson, 69, of Grand Island was going through the drive-through lane at the restaurant. Elliott said that the driver’s side door to Dickinson’s vehicle was open, and the upper portion of his body was outside of the vehicle.
The upper portion of his body became trapped between the vehicle and the building, and the vehicle edged forward, Elliott said.
“We’ll probably never have answers for this,” Elliott said.
Elliott said that Dickinson’s right leg had been amputated, and he had a prosthetic leg. His vehicle had been altered so that he could drive using his left foot.
“It was just a freak accident,” Elliott said.
Elliott said that there was no video camera inside the vehicle to show what happened, and there was no video camera on the exterior of the McDonald’s building to document what happened.
Police were dispatched to the scene at 10:23 a.m. Dec. 23. When they arrived, they found Dickinson trapped between the vehicle and the east side of the building. No one else was in the vehicle.
